THEY ARE GOOD AND ALL GOOD!
By: David L. Moore, MD
Over the past 3 weeks you have read about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables in stroke and diabetes prevention. If those benefits are not enough to sway you maybe this will. A study reported in the July 2014 British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports that eating 5 portions of fruits and vegetables daily will reduce, “all cause mortality,” death from all causes! “Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 16 studies, evaluating data from 833,234 participants and adjusting the results for differences in data quality and study design. The data included 56,423 deaths. The study showed that significantly lower all-cause death risk—including cardiovascular disease—was associated with a higher intake of fruits and vegetables. For every additional fruit and vegetable consumed (daily), researchers discovered a mean 5% reduction risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease.” So for optimal health eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables every day!
