Fruits & Vegetables in Mental Health in Women

By: David L. Moore, MD

A study from Australia examining the effects of fruits and vegetable consumption on mental health showed that eating even moderate amounts of fruits and vegetables was associated with less emotional distress. After looking at 60,404 adults (45 years and older), it was observed that, “After adjustments for sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle risk factors, the researchers found that baseline fruit and vegetable consumption, measured separately or together, was associated with a lower prevalence of psychological distress.... While most of the associations remained significant at medium levels of intake, they were no longer significant at the highest levels of intake in fully adjusted models.” Again, following God’s original diet will benefit you in ways not generally anticipated. So for better emotional health eat more fruits and vegetables! (BMJ. doi:10.1136/bmjopen-2016-014201).
