By: David L. Moore, MD

“About 795,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means, on average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year. That's about 1 of every 18 deaths.” (Jun 8, 2015 www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/) If a person survives a stroke most often they are partially paralyzed resulting in decreased productivity. What can you do to help prevent this devastating and debilitating disease? Eat more fruits and vegetables! A study reported in the journal Stroke, May 8, 2014 estimates that eating one and a half to two cups of fruit daily reduces the risk of stroke by 32% and consuming the same quantity of vegetables reduces the stroke risk by 11%. That’s a total reduction of 43% just by eating fruits and vegetables! The study included over 760,000 participants with a reported 17,000 strokes. So for optimal health eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables every day!
