Lifestyle Approach To Eliminate Acid Reflux
Acid reflux disease is reported to affect over 20% of the U.S. population.
Medications, such as proton-pump inhibitors (PPI's), are very effective in reducing symptoms; but, as addressed last week, can have serious side-effects!
Why is this problem so prevalent?
Unhealthy lifestyle choices are the blame!
Over the years, I have found several simple lifestyle changes that will reduce, if not eliminate, this problem. They are listed in no particular order and should be introduced completely over time.
- Avoid eating between meals, which allows complete emptying of the stomach, thus preventing reflux.
- Avoid chocolate, caffeine, salty and spicy foods, and any other foods or beverages that cause symptoms.
- Avoid drinking water with meals, which can lead to indigestion.
- Do not eat anything within 5 hours before going to bed. This allows the stomach to empty completely.
- Chew foods thoroughly and eat slowly.
With these simple changes, and God's blessings, reflux will significantly improve or vanish.
