Acid reflux disease is reported to affect over 20% of the U.S. population.

Medications, such as proton-pump inhibitors (PPI's), are very effective in reducing symptoms; but, as addressed last week, can have serious side-effects!

Why is this problem so prevalent?

Unhealthy lifestyle choices are the blame!

Over the years, I have found several simple lifestyle changes that will reduce, if not eliminate, this problem. They are listed in no particular order and should be introduced completely over time.

  1. Avoid eating between meals, which allows complete emptying of the stomach, thus preventing reflux.
  2. Avoid chocolate, caffeine, salty and spicy foods, and any other foods or beverages that cause symptoms.
  3. Avoid drinking water with meals, which can lead to indigestion.
  4. Do not eat anything within 5 hours before going to bed. This allows the stomach to empty completely.
  5. Chew foods thoroughly and eat slowly.

With these simple changes, and God's blessings, reflux will significantly improve or vanish.
